What is Heartburn? | Dr. Jeffrey Linder | Top10MD
Despite its name, heartburn is in no way related to the heart. In fact, this is a digestive condition where stomach acid comes in to contact with the esophagus causing irritation. The result is feeling a burning sensation that starts on the diaphragm all the way to the chest. Usually, heartburn is accompanied by a sour or bitter taste, which is primarily the stomach acid you regurgitated and made its way to your mouth. Stress will also cause heartburn as this increases acid production and slow down the emptying of the stomach. So, in order to manage heartburn, you may want to start by making some lifestyle changes. This means that you have to try eating frequent smaller meals rather than three large ones. Eating slowly can also help as well as avoiding going to bed right after having a big dinner. This is mainly because the belly swells due to the presence of the baby. It puts pressure on the stomach, which pushes stomach contents, such as acid, up. Obesity is also another contributing factor to chronic heartburn. The reason behind this is because of the fat belly, which also puts pressure on the stomach. Usually, they are taken twice a day and they provide relief from heartburn within 30 minutes of taking it. You have to remember that although it can be purchased over the counter, you still need a doctor s prescription for higher doses. If you still continue to experience heartburn, the doctor may recommend adding a drug, such as metoclopramide. Lastly, if you must eat meat, you have to eat lean meat that has little fat on it. Chicken, fish and turkey are acceptable meats that can help decrease the likelihood of you experiencing heartburn. These are the foods that you can and cannot eat. By following these tips, you can be sure that you will be able to solve your heartburn problem. Basically, chronic heartburn is where the problem lasts for long periods of time and it occurs with a much greater frequency. If you suffer from extremely painful heartburn more than twice a week, then you are suffering from chronic heartburn. It is also a sign of a much more serious illness. Heartburn is also called acid reflux, pyrosis, and even acid indigestion just to name a few.
