Making Marriage Work | Dr. John Gottman

Whether your mate and you get into a screaming match or prefer the silent treatment, your children are aware of the raging emotions in the home. If you suspect that your marriage is in trouble and needs some help, it probably would be a good idea to look into some options. Marriage help is available in many ways. Sure, the weather and kids pop up in the conversation but that is about as far as it goes. You know that your marriage could use a little help or boost, but counseling or therapy are not quite what you had in mind. If you are interested in marriage help that isn't quite as structured or rigid as one-on-two counseling sessions in your local mental health clinic, you and your partner may be interested in a workshop or seminar. Being married to someone who suffers from depression or mental illness can be extremely hard. Marriage help is best for both partners of the relationship whenever possible. Your spouse may need individual counseling or therapy, but the both of you need to seek marriage help together. It can help the marriage to understand what causes your loved one's depression or mental illness. Don't fester about a situation for days or even months before bringing it to light. A therapist that provides marriage help will tell you it is easier to manage problems when they are small rather than allowing them to build up. Show your commitment to your spouse. Avoid any marriage help by letting your loved one know how much he or she means to you. This theory even applies to marriage help. Couples need not travel to a therapist office several miles from home to chat about their troubles. Now, marriage help is available via the phone and internet. Married couples seeking support can find help online. Mentor couples who have successfully crossed a hurdle in their own marriage are available to pass along any trusted advice to husbands and wives currently going through similar situations. When a couple visits with a licensed counselor, psychologist, or therapist, the cost of the session is not completely outside the realm of services covered by your insurance. Marriage counseling is not always considered a covered service, but will frequently fall under the category of mental health. Some insurance plans considers this form of marriage help to be similar to a doctor visit.
